We wanted to write a blog with family photography tips for our clients!
The most important thing during a photoshoot is to interact and connect. Affection between family members makes for the best photos. We know that seems like common sense, but everyone tends to stiffen up in front of the camera!
Important overall tips:
- Empty pockets! Cell phone and keys bulging out of pockets are easy to forget!
- Close gaps! It’s best to stand very close to each other so there are no gaps between subjects. And having a physical touch point of connection creates the best images.
- It tends to look best when babies are held to the side and not in front.
- For those at the edge of photos with an unoccupied arm, it always looks nice to put that hand in your pocket.
- Be sure to only wear accessories you want in the photos. For example, sometimes people have watches on that they don’t want photographed. It’s also common to forget hair ties on wrists!
- Please only wear glasses if they are something you wear daily. Glasses can be reflective and difficult to photograph due to this. If you are going to wear glasses to a shoot and have a pair that do NOT have blue light protection, please bring those. Blue light coatings tend to be extra difficult to photograph as they usually have a strong, blue-colored reflective film.
- If your child has a go to song/stuffie/sound that always makes them smile, let us know so we can use it if/when needed!
- If there is a huge height discrepancy between spouses, it can be helpful to wear heels as subjects tend to photograph best when there aren’t very large height discrepancies.
We offer classic, artistic, affordably San Diego family photography sessions and shoot all over San Diego county. Our favorite beach location for San Diego family photography is Del Mar beach, but we also love La Jolla Tide Pools, Mission Beach, Fletcher Cove in Solana Beach, etc. Some of our favorite rustic locations are right here in our own community of San Elijo Hills, San Marcos as well as Felicita Park in Escondido and a some more unknown canyon areas in University City, San Diego. We are always discovering new spots and love to take clients to spots that are not well known and absolutely stunning. This way, sessions can be enjoyed without 15 other photographers shooting at the same time at the same location! Email us for inquiries!
